The Australian Consulate in Chiang Mai is headed by an Honorary Consular officer.
The Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade appointed Ronald J (Ron) Elliott as Honorary Consul of Australia in Chiang Mai for northern Thailand on 20 October 2015. The Australian Consulate is staffed by the Honorary Consul and his Thai support assistant.
The jurisdiction of the Honorary Consul (Ron) extends throughout 11 Northern Thailand provinces that include:
- Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai,
- Mae Hong Son,
- Lamphun, Lampang,
- Phayao, Phrae,
- Nan, Uttaradit,
- Sukhothai and Tak.
The Royal Thai Government endorsed this appointment effective 30 December 2016 and issued the Exequatur on 16 January 2017. Note – An “Exequatur” is a patent which a head of state issues to a foreign consul, guaranteeing the consul’s rights and privileges of office and ensuring recognition in the state to which the consul is appointed to exercise such powers.
The Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, April 1963 governs consular posts headed by honorary consular officers. The goals of the Honorary Consul in Chiang Mai, in this role are to:
- provide some consular assistance to Australians,
- promote and strengthen the Australian-Thailand bilateral relationships, and
- support the Australian Embassy in the consular district.
